  23. I just got _Secret Life_.   While I haven't had a chance to read it in detail,
  24. I have skimmed it.  I think people are going to be referring to it for quite
  25. some time.

  27. In Chapter 11, "Answers," you say WRT fantasy-prone personalities (FPPs), "Of
  28. course, some people do spin fantasy-abduction tales.  But their idiosyncratic
  29. stories do not match the accounts given by other abductees.  They have not
  30. usually undergone competent hypnosis.  They act more like a combination of
  31. channelers annd contactees seeking publicity and perhaps money and yet still
  32. not fabricating a conscious hoax."  This is apparently geared towards
  33. dismissing FPPs as a viable explanation for abduction reports.

  35. In the article "UFO Abductees and Contactees: Psychopathology or Fantasy
  36. Proneness?" (_Professional Psychology: Research and Practice_, 22(3): 215-222,
  37. 1991), Keith Basterfield (who I think posts here on occasion), et al, link a
  38. high proportion of abductee and contactee reports to FPP.  Admittedly, they
  39. examined only case histories (as I understand it) and not the subjects
  40. themselves, but doesn't this tend to contradict the statements you made in
  41. _Secret Life_?

  43. DISCLAIMER:  I have no training in psychology.  I'm just asking a question
  44. about what appears to *this* layman as some mutually-exclusive conclusions.

  68. desired distance, and if something moves to that spot and is detected as being
  69. in focus, the camera fires. Note that this function is completely passive.

  91. I have noticed in appendix B on page 327-328 of your book _Secret
  92. Life_, you list 39 abductees whose statements appear in your book.
  93. I have also observed that of the 39 individuals listed, 22 are
  94. female and 17 are male, or a ratio of female to male of
  95. approximately 1.3:1. I realize this is a small cross section to
  96. work with, but do you feel this apparent sexual correlation will
  97. continue to hold true? If so, have you any clues as to why 56.4% of
  98. your sample set is female and 43.6% is male?
  99.  
  100. I am also interested in the geographical origins of the individuals
  101. on this list. Were these predominantly east coast cases, or was it
  102. a more geographically heterogeneous mix?

  104. Besides their perceptible predilection for female subjects, the
  105. aliens also seem to be partial to rather "zoftig" women. Have you
  106. noticed a higher than anticipated number of moderately to grossly
  107. over-weight women in your sample set? If so, were they over-weight
  108. prior to their experiences, or were their body mass expansions
  109. consequent to the abduction event? One abductee I have worked with
  110. feels that her "overweightness" is a kind of safety mechanism to
  111. protect her from future abductions. Conversely, I know you
  112. mentioned in your book that the aliens became quite concerned for
  113. an abductee that was exhibiting symptoms anorexia. They told her
  114. she should eat more.

  116. BTW, Dr. Michele Lecher, the clinical psychologist from Oregon I
  117. mentioned to you a few weeks back, is currently finishing your
  118. book, and I hope to schedule a conference call at a time mutually
  119. convenient for all in the near future.

  150. I agree John. Perhaps the more low-tech the detection device is,
  151. the better the chances for success in catching an alien in the act.
  152. As David Jacobs related in _Secret Life_, the aliens seemed quite
  153. flustered by an abductee's plastic dental retainer plate, yet are
  154. capable of manipulating our minds almost effortlessly.

  157. mode found in photographic equipment utilizes infra-red to detect
  158. an object that has moved into focus, so this too is not entirely
  159. passive.

  162. proved useful in forestalling, but not eliminating the abduction
  163. experience. Eventually, the aliens simply ordered the victim to get
  164. out of bed and turn off the camera, allowing the abduction to
  165. proceed on schedule - and undetected.

  167. Perhaps we need something *really* low-tech... like a large wooden
  168. crate, propped up by a dowel rod attached to the abductee's ankle
  169. with a piece of monofilament fishing line... with a strawberry ice
  170. cream cone as bait. The only problem is how to keep the ice cream
  171. from melting. <g>

  197.   No, in fact they are entirely passive. The AF system found in SLR cameras
  198. "looks" for highest image contrast; it's presumed that an in-focus image shows
  199. higher contrast than an out-of-focus image, and it works. These things can
  200. focus on a race car coming straight at you In the trap-focus mode, the camera
  201. shoots when image contrast is sufficiently high to be taken for an in-focus
  202. image. You're partly right; most of the small AF point'n'shoot cameras use an
  203. IR rangefinder.

  211. sealed box in some way that the victim couldn't move the box. But then, I
  212. believe David Jacobs mentioned that some victims are made to go into another
  213. room.....

  247.         I saw your message (part of which is above) and wondered if 
  248. you would be interested in talking to the specialist I interviewed 
  249. for OMNI when I wrote about Linda Howe and Dr. John Altschuler's 
  250. conclusions (re her then-new book, _An Alien Harvest_.)  I talked to 
  251. several veterinary specialists for that article, and all said the #1 
  252. expert in the field for this type of forensic pathology would be Dr. 
  253. John King at Cornell.  Linda was kind enough to send Dr. King a copy 
  254. of her book (which, as you may know, reproduces the slides of animal 
  255. tissue and offers close-up, clear  photos of the "cookie cutter" 
  256. wounds), and, when that intrigued him to the point he asked to see 
  257. the actual slides himself, she and Dr. Altshuler also shared that 
  258. material with him.  Dr. King is a delightfully candid person who 
  259. speaks clearly and understandably, for layman or professional.  If 
  260. you would like to have a contact number for him, let me know.

  282. Alright you guys, (hyuck, hyuck, hyuck...).  What's the big deal about a
  283. photograph?  Nobody, _nobody_, would believe it anyway.  We already have a
  284. dozen or so fully studied photos that have led to exactly nowhere...

  286. I just started Jacob's book so this might sound completely stupid but why
  287. hasn't anybody used a personal telemetry device that _cannot be detached_???

  289. These devices are cheap and common, already in use by numerous local and state
  290. jurisdictions to monitor work-release prisoners and parolees, and I don't
  291. care _what_ orders are given to the potential abductee these devices
  292. are _not_ coming off without a serious bit of work...???  I can't be the first
  293. person to come up with this idea...

  295. Regarding abductees being ordered by their abductors to turn off the camera, I
  296. assume that _this_ (the abductee waking/rising and then turning off the camera)
  297. is also on videotape?  Has anyone seen this?
